Hello.

My name’s Chris Fast and I’m a Guelph based 3D and VFX generalist focusing on smaller, independent projects. The main software I use is Blender for 3D and compositing, and Davinci Resolve for editing, colour, and other compositing. I work in an hdr linear workflow, saving acescg exr rendered image sequences and combining them with camera footage to Davinci Wide Gamut in Davinci Resolve. One thing I am not is a web designer so please excuse my messy online bedroom.

Here are a few projects I’ve worked on:

The Drop

The Drop follows two professional streetwear line waiters for hire diving into the city’s buzzing culture of luxury goods and exclusive releases. A major story arc revolved around the characters going viral on social media. For this I needed to recreate an animate multiple Instagram and Tiktok user interfaces, as well as track and composite many screen replacements.

Premiering at the Paradise Theatre in Toronto, The Drop won Best Toronto Web Series at 2023 Toronto Webfest and was nominated for 5 awards at the Canadian Screen Awards.

Trauma Bonding

Following the success of The Drop, writer and director Dani Pagliarello created Trauma Bonding, a pilot episode for a Netflix series. The plot revolves around psychiatrist Dr. Darryl Day, who treats patients in her car, and her mutinous HAL-like AI driving assistant, MILES. I was tasked with designing a minimalist and futuristic interface for MILES as well as animating his voice and various graphical expressions he made.

Eddy Nova

Eddy Nova is a silly personal project about dimwitted, Elon-idolizing spy sent on space missions in an effort to out-smart and (when that inevitably fails) out-muscle the leaders of alien civilizations to further some notion of an earthly empire . All the sets and most of the props for this series are made in blender and the live action green screen footage is composited in.

Bug Trap

Local band Animal Boy approached me about making a music video using the concept of a cardboard cutout. Band leader Tommy and I came up with a concept, and from there I was given a lot of creative liberty. It was truly a one man operation as I wrote the storyboard, directed and filmed the shoot, edited, coloured, 3D animated, and composited the video independently.

(Remember when I said “creative liberty”? If you’re thinking of working with me please know the janky animation and effects in these music videos are fun stylistic choices and not necessarily what I believe to be top-tier effects work.)

Step Dog

Toronto band The Effens contacted me about helping make animations for a video they were making. They wanted me to portray their band performing inside their pregnant friend’s womb using some low poly characters they’d seen me post on social media. I delivered a plethora of animated shots and a different editor combined them with the camera footage.

Teaching

Aside from my freelance work I also run Blender workshops at Ed Video in Guelph.

I also have a modestly successful very part-time Youtube channel where I post 3D ideas I come up with. You can check it out here.
